Relationship first
Reconnect before you debate. The relationship comes first, and politics can wait.
What it is
Before any talk about politics, rebuild the connection. Spend time together, talk about the things you share, and let the relationship feel good again. Politics can wait, sometimes for a long time.
Why it works
Family therapist William Doherty, who designed the Braver Angels workshops, puts it simply: “We have bonds that are deeper and more powerful than politics.” He reminds people that most of those who disagree with us “aren't bad folks,” and that their political opinions aren't the only thing that defines them. A relationship that feels safe can hold a hard conversation. One that feels shaky usually can't.
How to do it
- Reach out about something that has nothing to do with politics.
- Do something together you both enjoy, like a meal, a game, or a walk.
- Bring up a good memory, or something you're both looking forward to.
- Let them be the one to raise politics, if it comes up at all.
- If it does, remind yourself that the relationship matters more than the argument.
See it in action
The setup: You support Trump. Your sister doesn't. Your last conversation ended in a fight, and you haven't really talked in months. Today is her birthday. (An illustration, not real people.)
How it usually goes
You: “Happy birthday. Hope you've calmed down since last time.”
A dig dressed up as a greeting. It reopens the fight before anything else can happen.
Them: “I wasn't the one who needed to calm down.”
She defends herself, and you're both back in the old argument.
You: “Here we go again. This is exactly why we don't talk.”
The birthday message has become one more piece of proof that you can't get along.
How it could go
You: “Happy birthday! I found a photo of us at the beach when we were kids and it made me smile. Miss you.”
Warm, personal, and nothing to argue with.
Them: “Aw, I remember that trip. Thank you. Miss you too.”
She answers in kind. The door is open again.
You: “Want to get lunch next week? Your pick.”
A small, concrete next step. Politics can wait.
Try it
