Kitchen Table Truce

30-second panic mode

In the room right now

When your heart is pounding, a long plan is useless. Pick where you are, use one line, and get through the next minute. That is the whole job right now.

A meal or a group, and the temperature is rising.

10-second reset

Unclench your jaw, drop your shoulders, and take one slow breath before you speak. Nothing good happens in the first three seconds of a spike.

Pause lines

Say one of these to drop the temperature.

  • “Let's put a pin in that for now—I'd rather hear how you've been.”

  • “I can feel myself getting worked up, and I don't want to say something I'll regret.”

  • “We're not going to settle this tonight, and that's okay. Pass the potatoes?”

Graceful exits

Ways to step out without slamming the door.

  • “I'm going to step outside for a minute and get some air. Save my seat.”

  • “I'm going to call it a night while we're still on good terms. Love you.”

  • “Let's pick this up another time—I want to actually enjoy being here with you.”
