Keeping the Peace with Your Adult Child at the Holidays

Your child is an adult now, with their own opinions and their own life. The urge to correct or convince is strong, and it is the fastest way to make the visit short and the phone calls rare.

These are conversation ideas, not therapy or professional advice. If a relationship involves threats, abuse, or fear for your safety, start here instead.

The common trap

Treating a difference of opinion as something you have to fix before the visit ends.

A better goal

Stay curious, ask about their life, and let the politics sit this one out.

Pass it on

Send the clean link and nothing about you travels with it. Sharing this page should never expose what you picked.

1. Before

  • Things have been okay. Protect that. You don't need to fix anything today.
  • Gatherings have an audience. Anything heavy is better saved for a quieter moment one-on-one.
  • They're an adult with their own reasons. Curiosity will do more than advice.
  • Try calling a truce out loud: "Can we call a kitchen table truce tonight? I care way more about catching up with you than arguing about the news."

2. Opening lines

“I'd really like to understand how you see it. What matters most to you about all this?”

“When you think about the country, what worries you most?”

“What's been the best part of your month?”

3. Techniques to lean on

4. If it heats up

“So what I'm hearing is that you're worried about ___. Did I get that right?”

“I actually agree with part of that. I just see the rest differently.”

“I think we both care about the same things. We just have different ideas about how to get there.”

5. Exit lines

“I love you, and I don't want to fight. I'm going to step away for a bit.”

“I'm going to get some air. I'll be back in a few minutes.”

6. After

  • Write down one thing you learned about why they see it their way.
  • Thank them for talking with you.
