One-on-One Talks

Reconnecting with a Sibling After Months of Silence

Months of silence turn into a wall that is hard to climb, mostly because neither of you wants to be the one who cares more. The first message only has to open the door; it does not have to fix anything.

These are conversation ideas, not therapy or professional advice. If a relationship involves threats, abuse, or fear for your safety, start here instead.

The common trap

Writing a long message that lists everything they did wrong first.

A better goal

Send one short, warm message that asks for nothing.

Pass it on

Send the clean link and nothing about you travels with it. Sharing this page should never expose what you picked.

First, your safety.

If you feel unsafe, it's okay not to have this conversation at all. When to step back

1. Before

  • Keep your first step small. The goal is contact, not a conversation about politics.
  • Expect a slow start. One friendly message is a win, even if the reply is short.
  • Shared history cuts both ways. Leave old scores out of this.

2. Opening lines

“No agenda, I just wanted to say hi. I've been thinking about you.”

“Saw something today that reminded me of you and made me laugh. Hope you're doing well.”

“I'm sorry it's been so long. I miss talking to you.”

3. Techniques to lean on

4. If it heats up

“I can feel us both getting heated. Can we slow down a second?”

“I love you too much to keep fighting about this right now. Can we take a break and come back to it?”

“Hang on, I want to make sure I understand you. Can you say that part again?”

5. Exit lines

“I love you, and I don't want to fight. I'm going to step away for a bit.”

“I'm going to get some air. I'll be back in a few minutes.”

6. After

  • Send a short, warm message about something that isn't politics within a day or two.
