Repairing After a Fight
Repairing a Fight About Politics with Your Partner
When the person you live with is also the person you are arguing with, there is no walking away to cool off. The good news: you have more reasons to fix it, and more chances to try.
These are conversation ideas, not therapy or professional advice. If a relationship involves threats, abuse, or fear for your safety, start here instead.
The common trap
Sleeping in separate rooms and letting the tension quietly become the new normal.
A better goal
Name the tension as something you two face together, then reset with something ordinary.
Pass it on
Send the clean link and nothing about you travels with it. Sharing this page should never expose what you picked.

1. Before
- Decide ahead of time what you'll do if it gets heated, so you aren't deciding in the moment.
- You'll see each other tomorrow too. Agree on when politics is off-limits, like meals or bedtime.
- You're on the same team. Say so out loud before you disagree.
2. Opening lines
“I'm sorry for what I said the other day. I was out of line.”
“I've been thinking about what you said, and I think I understand better now why it matters to you.”
“That didn't go how either of us wanted. Can we try again sometime, a little slower?”
3. Techniques to lean on
4. If it heats up
“I can feel us both getting heated. Can we slow down a second?”
“I love you too much to keep fighting about this right now. Can we take a break and come back to it?”
“Hang on, I want to make sure I understand you. Can you say that part again?”
5. Exit lines
“I love you, and I don't want to fight. I'm going to step away for a bit.”
“I'm going to get some air. I'll be back in a few minutes.”
6. After
- Follow up within a week with plans to do something together.
- If it goes badly, you can try again later. Repair rarely takes just one conversation.
