Repairing After a Fight
When a Parent Stops Talking to You Over Politics: How to Reach Out
When a parent goes cold or stops replying because of how you vote, it can feel deeply disorienting. You want to leave the door open for reconnection without begging or giving up your self-respect.
These are conversation ideas, not therapy or professional advice. If a relationship involves threats, abuse, or fear for your safety, start here instead.
The common trap
Sending a long, emotional essay explaining your political views in the hope they will finally understand you.
A better goal
Send a brief, low-pressure olive branch that keeps the door cracked open while protecting your peace.
Pass it on
Send the clean link and nothing about you travels with it. Sharing this page should never expose what you picked.

First, your safety.
If you feel unsafe, it's okay not to have this conversation at all. When to step back
1. Before
- Keep your first step small. The goal is contact, not a conversation about politics.
- Text strips out tone. Reread before you send, and never reply while you're angry.
- Old family roles show up fast. You can be respectful without going back to being the kid.
2. Opening lines
“No agenda, I just wanted to say hi. I've been thinking about you.”
“Saw something today that reminded me of you and made me laugh. Hope you're doing well.”
“I'm sorry it's been so long. I miss talking to you.”
3. Techniques to lean on
4. If it heats up
“I can feel us both getting heated. Can we slow down a second?”
“I love you too much to keep fighting about this right now. Can we take a break and come back to it?”
“Hang on, I want to make sure I understand you. Can you say that part again?”
5. Exit lines
“This is hard to do over text. Can we talk about it in person sometime?”
“I need some time to think about what you said. Can I text you tomorrow?”
6. After
- Follow up within a week with plans to do something together.
- If it goes badly, you can try again later. Repair rarely takes just one conversation.
