You Want to Change Their Mind About Politics
It is a normal thing to want: you are sure you are right, and you love them, so of course you want them to see it too. But pushing hard usually does the opposite of what you hope.
These are conversation ideas, not therapy or professional advice. If a relationship involves threats, abuse, or fear for your safety, start here instead.
The common trap
Treating every conversation as your last chance to land the argument.
A better goal
Aim at being heard and staying close, and treat a change of mind as a bonus rather than the goal.
Pass it on

About that goal
You picked the goal of actually changing their mind. That's an honest thing to want, and it's worth knowing that pushing hard for it usually backfires and can cost you the relationship. This plan aims at something that works better: being heard, and staying close. If they ever change their mind, treat it as a bonus, not the goal.
1. Before
- Decide ahead of time what you'll do if it gets heated, so you aren't deciding in the moment.
- Pick a time when neither of you is tired, hungry, or rushed.
- Remember what brought you together in the first place, and start there.
- Try calling a truce out loud: "Can we call a kitchen table truce tonight? I care way more about catching up with you than arguing about the news."
2. Opening lines
“I'd really like to understand how you see it. What matters most to you about all this?”
“When you think about the country, what worries you most?”
“What's been the best part of your month?”
3. Techniques to lean on
4. If it heats up
“I can feel us both getting heated. Can we slow down a second?”
“I love you too much to keep fighting about this right now. Can we take a break and come back to it?”
“Hang on, I want to make sure I understand you. Can you say that part again?”
5. Exit lines
“I love you, and I don't want to fight. I'm going to step away for a bit.”
“I'm going to get some air. I'll be back in a few minutes.”
6. After
- Notice one moment when they seemed to feel heard. That's the win to build on.
- Drop the scoreboard. You're not keeping points, and neither are they.
